Growing up in a diverse family, naturally, my friend groups reflect that same diversity. In addition, my mom reared me in an area just outside of Ann Arbor, Michigan, which also included a very diverse population. Furthermore, my mom was:
- A hippie/Flower child
- A White Panther
- A Civil Rights activist
- A feminist
- A promotor of peace
She also volunteered with our community, our faith community, and with her family. Although we went to Catholic mass, she never forced it down my throat and said that I needn’t go to church to have a relationship with God or whoever I defined my Higher Power to be. Needless to say, I was brought up to be an all-inclusive human, and I really appreciate how she parented me, as I have tried to do the same with my sons.
While I genuinely love living in Pure Michigan, I have considered moving to the East Coast and am looking for the following daily living qualities:
- Diverse population with various ethnicities, cultures, and socioeconomic backgrounds
- LGBTQ+-friendly policies, rights, events and community
- A welcoming community
- Strong arts, food, and culture scene
- Four seasons with temperatures that are not colder than Michigan (ok, so maybe this isn’t related to diversity per se, but it’s a must for me!)
- Environmentally friendly with plenty of clean outdoor spaces, parks, and state or natural forest land
Weather is essential in deciding where I live. For example, Scranton, Pennsylvania, is considered a diverse community and has a climate similar to Michigan, but it tends to be colder than the Detroit Metro Area where I live.
According to Realtor.com and other sources, they have identified the following East Coast towns as diverse and LGBTQ+ friendly places to visit and live, including but not limited to:
- Pittsburgh, PA
- Providence, RI
- Virginia Beach, VA
- Fort Lauderdale, FL
- Salem, MA
- Asbury Park, New Jersey
- Fire Island, New York
- Skunk City (Syracuse, NY)
- Griers Fork (Charlotte, NC)
- Lower East Side (Manhattan, NY)
- Holliswood (Queens, NY)
What U.S. city has the best quality of life?
In Michigan, we have many diverse and LGBTQ+-friendly neighborhoods in which to live, work, and play. Here are a few that I personally know are known to be inclusive:
- Ann Arbor
- Ferndale
- West Blomfield
- Saugatuck
- East Lansing
- Detroit
- Pleasant Ridge (where I work)
MSN cites that, “Quality of life is one of the most important aspects one should consider before moving to a new city.
US News & World Report created a list of the country’s most livable cities, weighing factors such as affordability, healthcare quality, and residents’ overall happiness.
US News & World Report released a list of the cities with the best quality of life for 2024 to 2025. Cities with places for outdoor activities, such as beaches and mountains, ranked higher. Ann Arbor, Michigan, was named the best city for a high quality of life,”.
I am not surprised that our own Ann Arbor made that list! Plus, I am also a proud University of Michigan alumni, so seeing our great town make the list is something I am most certainly grateful for.
Since this article is revealing all the diversity and inclusiveness of Michigan, let’s keep exploring this Midwest gem, as I don’t think I will be moving any time soon.
Best inclusive diverse towns in Michigan
Although where I am rearing my sons is full of environmentally friendly and plenty of clean outdoor spaces, parks, and state land, this township, in particular, is not very diverse…yet. Many people like me migrated to the “Lakes Area” from the Ann Arbor area to have more wide open spaces versus living closer to the city, which is more inclusive and diverse. Still, even though our numbers are growing steadily, we’re not there yet.
However, we are not far from West Bloomfield, Waterford, and Pontiac, which are more inclusive and diverse towns.
Michigan is home to many welcoming and inclusive communities that embrace diversity in all its forms. Whether you are looking for LGBTQ+-friendly policies, strong cultural scenes, or a variety of ethnic influences, there are plenty of towns and cities in the state that fit the bill.
Ypsilanti – Often overshadowed by its neighbor Ann Arbor, Ypsilanti is a vibrant, artsy town with a strong commitment to inclusivity. It has a thriving LGBTQ+ community, a diverse population, and a rich history of activism. The city hosts Pride events, has numerous LGBTQ+-owned businesses, and offers affordable living compared to Ann Arbor.
Grand Rapids – Known for its craft beer scene and burgeoning art scene, Grand Rapids is also one of the most progressive cities in West Michigan. The city is home to various cultural festivals, diverse neighborhoods, and inclusive policies that make it an excellent place for people of all backgrounds.
Kalamazoo – Home to Western Michigan University, Kalamazoo is a college town with a strong sense of community. It boasts a mix of urban and suburban living, making it ideal for those seeking both excitement and tranquility. The city has a strong LGBTQ+ presence and an array of diverse restaurants, music venues, and cultural organizations.
Royal Oak – Located just outside of Detroit, Royal Oak is a hotspot for young professionals and families looking for an inclusive, progressive community. It’s known for its walkable downtown, vibrant nightlife, and a welcoming attitude toward people of all backgrounds. The annual Motor City Pride parade is a testament to the city’s commitment to inclusivity.
Lansing – As the state capital and home to Michigan State University, Lansing is a city that prides itself on diversity. The city offers strong support for immigrant communities, LGBTQ+ rights, and minority-owned businesses. The REO Town neighborhood, in particular, has become a cultural hub with eclectic shops, restaurants, and public art displays.
With so many inclusive and diverse towns in Michigan, it’s no wonder that the state continues to be a great place to live for people of all backgrounds.
